Hello Mathews Tigers! My name is Julie Yerkes, and I have the privilege of being your school counselor. This is my sixth year at Mathews, and I love being a part of the MES family! Before this time, I had the opportunity to work with military students in 10 of our schools including Matthews. Prior to this, I worked with mental health programs, and moved several times with my military family! My husband and I have three children. My goal this year is to get to know your child and to learn about the wonderful things that make them unique. I believe that in knowing your children I can better support their social/emotional and academic needs as they learn and grow.
The purpose of this website is to provide you with resources that you can access that can give extra support to your child and your family. I will do my best to add the social emotional learning topics that we cover each month in class. Should you need to contact, or if your child would like to meet with me, feel free to send me an email at the address in the contact section of this website.
Part of my role as a school counselor is to provide whole group classroom core curriculum counseling (guidance), small group (often lunch bunch) with more focused social emotional learning time, as well as individual support for our students. I also provide support in the building for our faculty and students as needed. During whole and small group time we focus on many topics throughout the year, including recognizing and handling feelings, friendship, conflict resolution, self control, tolerance, integrity, bullying, and being a good digital citizen.
